Members of the Coral Springs Community came together at Veterans Park to honor U.S. military veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep the United States free. The Coral Springs Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol presented the colors and participated in the placing of the wreath.

Mayor Skip Campbell spoke on the importance of remembering and honoring veterans who have given so much to the nation. And he emphasized the fact that many military personnel give their lives to defend the freedoms of U.S. citizens. Members of the Coral Springs Commission spoke and also said it is important to remember members of the military who have given their lives to protect their fellow citizens.

Thomas Matteo, a Marine Corps veteran who had a long and distinguished career in the Marines and served in the Vietnam War was the keynote speaker. He was wounded three times in the Vietnam War. He is also a veteran of the Miami Police Department and was awarded the Medal of Valor, the highest Police Award for stopping an armed robbery.

Matteo spoke on the iimportance of honoring military veterans. He also said the nation need to do more to help the many veterans who are at risk of suicide because of PTSD and other difficulties they are facing.

The ceremony featured the laying of a wreath, playing of taps and gun salute. Many military veterans attended and were honored.
