In 24 hours, Lady Luck, the ship the length of a football field will be sunk in approximately 120-feet of water with her stack 40-feet under the surface. The ship is complete with underwater art exhibits and a whimsical faux casino as one of the largest contributions to Florida’s artificial reef system and one of the most easily accessible major dive sites in the nation. Lady Luck will be the centerpiece of the new Shipwreck Park, surrounded by 16 existing wrecks already covered with marine life.
Formerly called the Newtown Creek, Lady Luck was purchased from the City of New York by Shipwreck Park, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit corporation. It was funded in part by the City of Pompano Beach and the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park. Like many New York retirees, Lady Luck’s final home will be in South Florida. She is expected to draw an estimated 35-thousand divers per year. Noted Pompano Beach artist Dennis MacDonald was commissioned to create the initial artwork.
