The Stoneman Douglas Cross Country program has enjoyed a great deal of success over the years. Those join the team are expected to put in long hours of training and be very dedicated to the sport. This year the girl’s team has won all its regular meets and won at the Coral Springs Cross Country Championship at Tradewinds Park.
Emilia Thom, a senior and team captain won by a fairly large margin at the Championship and won over a large field of runners. She loves the sport and hopes to compete in the state championship meet. “It takes a lot of dedication and discipline to be a good cross country runner,” she said. “I train six days a week. It is something I like to do. It is therapy for the brain,” Thom said. She is in the top ten percent of her class academically.
Being successful is also a good feeling. “The feeling of winning is awesome,” she said. “I want to make it to the state championship.”
Angela Chambers, a coach for the Stoneman Douglas Cross Country team believes that dedication important to winning. “A runner needs to be motivated. We do a speed workouts and we train on hills. We also do long distance runs of as much as ten miles. You need to be have a good attitude to be a good cross country runner,” said Chambers.
Amanda Taylor, one of the top runners on the Stoneman Douglas team loves being a part of the program and believes in the importance of hard work and discipline to achieve success. “It takes discipline and hard work. We do a lot of speed workouts. I like being a part of this team,” she said.
A major benefit is the camaraderie of being a part of a team where the members work hard for success. Most of the runners have good grades and are at the top of their class academically.
Karel Klos, a senior and team captain for the Stoneman Douglas boy’s team said, “It takes a lot of mental strength and discipline to do well in cross country. We do long runs and a lot of speed training. I love being a part of the team,” he said.
Nick Boyer, a top runner for the team said, “It takes a lot of hard work to do well. You have to be dedicated to being the very best and never give up,” he said.
Austin Freese said, “I like being on the team. You have to be dedicated, eat right and put in a lot of hard work,” he said.
