Chi Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated hosted 2K16 Community Health Fair: A focus on Family Health, Cancer Awareness and Prevention , to kickoff National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; Saturday, October 1, 2016, at the Northwest Regional Library in Coral Springs. More than 275 families and community participants were in attendance; the second largest in the chapters history based on registration sign-in. Participants received health information, participated in demonstrations, raffles and giveaways.
Community participating partners included Broward Health at Coral Springs, Florida Department of Health in Broward, Juice Plus, NAMI, OneBlood, Holy Cross Hospital Community Outreach Health Services, Care Resource, Florida Senior Medicare Patrol, Friends/Family Spinal Care, Pansys Garden of Eden Breast Cancer Foundation, II, Inc., Care Plus Health Plans, Broward County Health Department, Memorial Regional Hospital, FREEBIE, Kale Her Way, Broward Health Imperial Point Man Van ( pre-accepted patients for mammograms on sliding scale), Wal-mart Sams Club, Black Girls Run and Broward Supervisor of Elections.
Walgreens Pharmacy provided free bags for every participant. Free blood pressure and glucose screenings were provided by Light of the World Clinic of Nova Southeastern University School of Osteopathic Medicine students.
Chick-Fil-A of Tamarac and Coral Springs, a sponsor, provided a healthy lunch for every participant that included a chicken sandwich or a small box of mini-chicken nuggets, chips, with assorted bottle juices.
The chapter showcased the sororitys international programs. Target I: ASCEND: signature program for Grades 9 through 12 disseminated breast cancer bags filled with goodies compliments of Susan G. Komen, Target III: Family Strengthening provided bags of healthy snacks with National Preparedness and domestic violence flyers, Target IV: Environmental Ownership provided bags with a Family-Focused Go-Green Flyer and sanitizing items. The Connection Committee conducted voter registration.
Completed surveys revealed a well- attended and successful event.
