Chi Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, joined more than 200 community participants for the annual 5KWalk for Sickle Cell Disease Awareness in Hampton Pines Park, North Lauderdale. The Broward County Chapter hosts the walk-a-thon to ensure the community’s awareness of this devastatingly debilitating and deadly disease that disproportionately affect African-Americans and Hispanics. Life expectancy is 30 years of age. The chapter raised $200 through its chapter walk participants; however, raised more than $1700 through a dinner participation; including ads as one of its members, Luwando Wright-Hines, was an honoree. Chi Psi Omega is an annual sponsor of all the organization’s events. Sponsorships, such as ours, help the organization give scholarships in the amount of $1,000 to five victims graduating from high school and entering college this fall.
Among participants in the walk were new State Representative Barrington Russell, Mayor Jack Brady of North Lauderdale,Commissioners Gerry Graziose and Lorenzo Woods; new commissioner Samson Borgelin and former Commissioner David Hilton.
