About 55,000 Broward County homeowners want $26.6 million for the fruit trees they lost in the State of Florida’s fight against citrus canker. These homeowners won a class-action lawsuit in 2008 against the Florida Department of Agriculture for not providing adequate compensation for cutting down their healthy fruit trees in an effort to stop the spread of citrus canker. The problem is that for the homeowners to receive their money, the Florida Legislature will have to pass a claims bill and this has not happened. Robert Gilbert, an attorney representing the homeowners believes the residents will eventually receive their money.
