Today, Wednesday, April 26, 2017, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) and the Broward Teachers Union (BTU) held a joint news conference to announce a tentative agreement. The agreement was reached after approximately four months of bargaining between the parties.

The tentative agreement, which must be ratified by employees covered by the Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement and subsequently approved by the School Board of Broward County, Florida, reflects an investment by BCPS of $30.8 million for teacher compensation/salaries, and overall increases of 3.5 percent (increases vary depending on applicable teacher salary schedule).

Additional highlights of the tentative agreement include the teacher performance appraisal system with an emphasis on professional development and teacher support, and increasing the number of teacher preplanning days from four to five, with two of the five days dedicated to planning only. The tentative agreement also includes the creation of a new joint committee that will continue to address areas such as teacher workload and daily planning/preparation time.

 

“We are excited to reach a tentative agreement with the BTU, and thank all of our teachers for their patience and support during this process,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “Our teachers work hard every day, providing high-quality instruction – and so much more – to help our students reach their highest potential. We must continue to work with the state legislature, to increase funding for school districts and allow us to continue to elevate teacher salaries to reflect the incredible dedication, commitment and responsibilities of our professional educators.”

Key details of the tentative agreement are listed below:

  • The new agreement is retroactive to the start of the 2016/17 school year
  • Teachers on the grandfathered salary schedule will receive salary increases ranging from 3 percent to 5 percent. Teachers on steps T and U will also receive a $2,000 increase to their base salaries.
  • Teachers on the pay for performance salary schedule will receive the following increases:

o   Teachers rated Highly Effective in 2015/16 will receive a 5.1 percent increase

o   Teachers rated Effective in 2015/16 will receive a 3 percent increase

 

Upon successful ratification and School Board approval, the District will work to provide the agreed upon salary increases as soon as possible.
