1. P. Taravella High School Marketing and DECA members placed 2nd among over 150 projects nationwide in a Lead2Feed community service project competition.  The $6,000 check will be divided between the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation (toward next year’s October 13th JPT 9/11 Stair Climb) and for Crisis Text Line graphics printed on student identification cards at Taravella, as well as at other Broward schools. iPads will also be purchased for the school’s ESE program.

Co-Chairs Aila Macarulay and Melissa Livermore, DECA Advisor Jamie Simmons, and Team 343 (the number of firefighters who died in the Twin Towers on 9/11) should be congratulated for overcome many obstacles, such as Hurricane Irma, in making the 2017 stair climb successful with $6,500 raised and over 100 climbers. SHAPE club members and Advisor Amanda Blum were partners with DECA in the climb.

Mr. Simmons’ marketing students learned classroom leadership and teamwork skills to reach Lead2Feed grant goals while impacting stair climb decisions. Simmons was also chosen Teacher of the Week by the Lead2Feed organization.  Last year’s group also won a grant for their Crisis Text Line promotion, which allows students in crisis a 741741 texting intervention service. Over 64 million separate texts have been made since 2013.
